Doctoral School of the University of Life Sciences in Lublin

Doctoral school of the University of Life Sciences in Lublin was established in 2019. PhD studies are conducted at the general academic, multidisciplinary Doctoral School. We offer a unique combination of interdisciplinarity and an advanced specialised curriculum. The Doctoral School of the University of Life Sciences in Lublin provides a joint course of study to all PhD students and a specialised programme for individual fields and disciplines. The uniform degree programme promotes the integration of the academic community, exchange of scientific experience and interdisciplinary perception of research problems. The added value of joint education is the open formula that allows PhD students constant scientific development and it enables the evolution of the Doctoral School according to the changing educational needs of the students of consecutive years. The path of specialised education for doctoral students is undertaken in collaboration with PhD thesis supervisors and the purpose of it is to implement individual research plans in Institutes and Departments, as well as to enable doctoral students to participate in seminars and professional traineeship. The specialised educational programme allows students to take part in various types of domestic and international courses, research internships and vocational training.

Opening lecture by title “Transdisciplinarity in Scientific and Engineering Research”

will be given by Prof. Joan García,

PhD from GEMMA-Group of Environmental Engineering and Microbiology, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya-BarcelonaTech, Spain

Joan García (1966) is Full Professor of Environmental Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya-BarcelonaTech (UPC). Prof. García defended his doctoral dissertation on wastewater treatment engineering in 1996 at the University of Barcelona. He has worked as postdoc research visitor at the University of California at Berkeley (2001), the University of Ghent, Belgium (2005) and Florida Gulf Coast University (2018, awarded with a Fulbright Commission mobility grant). In 2008, he was awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation for the Intensification of Research Activity due to his extensive contributions to water resources research and wastewater engineering.

Prof. García carries out interdisciplinary research on the development and improvement environmental biotechnologies that allow the treatment of wastewaters and other types of wastes whilst mimicking natural functioning and therefore maximizing eco-efficiency. His research is currently focused on microalgae-based treatment systems (such as high-rate algal ponds and closed or semi-closed photobioreactors) and nature-based solutions (such as constructed wetlands) for water and sludge treatment. Moreover, he is fully involved in the recovery of bioproducts and bioenergy in the context of the circular bioeconomy.

Prof. García has written over 200 articles published in international scientific as well as technical journals and proceedings (h-index = 51). He is in the Stanford University ranking for the world 2% most cited authors in all career in the field of Environmental Engineering. He is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the Elsevier ‘Nature-Based Solutions Journal’ (since 2021) and Managing Editor of the journal ‘Desalination and Water Treatment’ (since 2009). Also, he was member of the Editorial Board of the journal ‘Ecological Engineering’ from 2007 to 2021.

3 PhD students (Cristina Ávila, Enrica Uggetti and Anna Pedescoll) obtained the UPC Extraordinary Doctorate Award (2015 and 2013). In 2014, the PhD student Roger Samsó received the Catalan Government Award for the best research work on Environmental Science. 2 PhD students of Prof. García (Enrica Uggetti and Fabiana Passos) are in the ranking for the world 2% most cited authors in the year 2020 in the field of Environmental Engineering. Prof. Joan García has trained 10 pots-doc researchers and 100+ Master and Graduate students, and more than 50 visitors (Students, Postdocs, Professors, etc.).

Prof. García has been Chair of many conferences and workshops, including the 10th International Society for Environmental Biotechnology Conference (2016), the 1st NaWaTech International Workshop (2013), and the 3rd Wetland Pollutant Dynamics and Control Symposium (2009), all of them held in Barcelona. Other achievements and awards include the Winner of the POWER Idea Contest for Sustainable Communities, EU (2019) and the Water Industry Award (WET), News and Water and Wastewater Treatment, UK (2018).
