Department of Animal Physiology started its activity in 1944, when didactic classes were held in the classes of S. Staszic middle school at Aleje Racławickie. Then, the Department changed its location several times. Since 1957, the Department is located at 12 Akademicka street in building of Collegium Veterinarium. The administration position was changed within years. Now is called Department of Animal Physiology. Since 2006, dr hab. Iwona Puzio is the Head of Department.
The main topic for many years is the study of nutritional, metabolic and hormonal determinants of the growth and development of the animal body. Members of team cooperate with polish and foreign partners with regard to scientific aspects.
As part of the main topic, which for many years has been the study of nutritional, metabolic and hormonal determinants of the growth and development of the animal body in recent years, the two main research directions have been specified:
– examination of regulatory mechanisms of secretory and digestive functions of the gastrointestinal tract and its maturation in early postnatal development
– examination of the physiological mechanisms of bone tissue development, as well as the formation of possible disorders in the aspect of pre- and postnatal interaction of hormonal, nutritional and toxicological factors, and the functioning of the gut-bone axis in various animal species.
