Historia

On 17 June 2005, the Senate of the University of Life Sciences in Lublin adopted a resolution (no. 21/2005-2006) “On the establishment of the Faculty of Food Sciences and Biotechnology” in force on 1 July 2005. The heard of the faculty was dr hab. Barbara Baraniak who was appointed by Rector prof. dr hab. Zdzislaw Targoński.

The following units, which were previously part of the Faculty of Agriculture, were included in the Faculty of Food Sciences and Biotechnology:

  • Department of Biochemistry and Food Chemistry,
  • Department of Chemistry,
  • Department of Fruit and Vegetable Processing,
  • Department of Agricultural and Food Industry Technology and Storage,
  • Sub-department of Analysis and Food Quality Assessment,
  • Sub-department of Designing Production Processes,
  • Sub-department of Commodity Science and Processing of Animal Raw Materials,
  • Postgraduate Study Centre of Quality Management in Food Production.

Pursuant to the resolution, by 31 December 2005, the units operating within the Faculty of Agriculture (the Department of Food Technology and Human Nutrition which was closed down, the Department of Chemistry, and the Department of Biochemistry and Food Chemistry) were transferred to the Faculty of Food Sciences and Biotechnology.

The period from 1 July 2005 to 31 December 2005 was the period of organisation of the faculty. At that time, an election committee was established to appoint representatives, out of the group of employees who were not independent academic lecturers, and the Council of the Faculty. The student government chose representatives from among the students. In December, the above-mentioned representatives chose the dean and deputy deans of the Faculty of Food Science and Biotechnology. Since October 2006, the units transferred to the structure of the faculty (except for the Department of Chemistry) occupied a new building at ul. Skromna 8.

Since 1 January 2006, the faculty started operating as the sixth faculty of the University of Life Sciences in Lublin. The majority of the independent members of the newly-established faculty belonged to the committee of the Faculty of Agriculture which was responsible for conducting final doctoral examinations in the discipline of food technology and nutrition as the Faculty of Agriculture was authorised, since 25 February 2002, by the Central Commission for Academic Degrees and Titles, to award an academic title of doctor of agricultural sciences in the discipline of food technology and nutrition. Since receiving the above-mentioned rights, the committee of the Faculty of Agriculture has awarded the degree of doctor of agricultural sciences in the discipline of food technology and nutrition to 19 students. Currently, such rights are also held by the Faculty of Food Sciences and Biotechnology – based on the application submitted in January 2006, the Central Commission for Academic Degrees and Titles, having consulted the Central Council of Higher Education, authorised on 26 June 2006 the faculty to award the title of doctor of agricultural sciences in the discipline of food technology and nutrition.

On 27 April 2009, the Central Commission for Academic Degrees and Titles, pursuant to Art. 5 sec. 2 of the Act of 14 March 2003 on Academic Degrees and Academic Title and Degrees and Title in Art (Dz.U./ Journal of Laws/ no. 65, item. 595 as amended Dz.U. ? Journal of Laws/ of 2005, no. 164, item. 1365), after consulting the Central Council of Higher Education, decided to grant the Faculty of Food Sciences and Biotechnology of the University of Life Sciences in Lublin the right to award the academic title of doctor of agricultural sciences in the discipline of food technology and nutrition.

Since 1 October 2009, four-year full-time doctoral studies in the scientific discipline of food technology and nutrition are conducted at the Faculty of Food Sciences and Biotechnology.
