Departament of Biochemistry started its activity in 1944 and in 1949 was located at Lubartowska street where it functioned up to 2007. Since that time the unit is located at Akademicka street in building of Collegium Veterinarium.
From very beginning scientific activity was related to antigen characteristics of selected bacteria and evaluated within years from chromatography and electrophoresis of proteins up to current time when mass spectrometry is used for protein analysis and identification.
Members of team cooperate with polish and foreign partners with regard to scientific and didactic aspects.
Didactics is great part of everyday activity and is of great concern of whole team.
Marta Kankofer graduated from Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Lublin in 1987 and immediately started working at Department of Biochemistry of this Faculty.
She defended Her PhD thesis entitled „Studies on the activity and physico-chemical properties of 15-hydroxyprostaglandin dehydrogenase in bovine retained and released placenta” in 1994. She obtained the title of doctor habilitated in veterinary biochemistry in 2002 based on work entitled “Studies on oxidative/antioxidative balance in physiologically released and retained bovine placenta” while the title of professor she obtained in 2009.
In 1997 she obtained the title of specialist in veterinary laboratory diagnostics.
She was granted 4 long lasting stays in University of Veterinary Medicine in Hannover (1990-1992), Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Utrecht (1994-1995) and University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna (2003-2004). Since Oct 2005 she is the head of Department of Biochemistry of Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Lublin.
Her scientific interests cover mainly biochemical mechanisms lying upon the attachment and detachment of fetal membranes in cows including the retention of fetal membranes. She was working with enzymes involved in prostaglandin metabolism, connective tissue metabolism, oxidative stress as well as with protein pattern of bovine retained and properly released placenta. She cooperates with national and international entities.
She published her papers among others in Placenta, Theriogenology, Reproduction in Domestic Animals, Virchows Archiv and presented Her results during scientific meetings.
She was awarded with 4 prizes of Rector of University of Life Sciences for outstanding scientific work and 2 for outstanding administrative activity. Her paper published in Placenta was selected for the award of Polish Society for Veterinary Sciences in 2001. In 2015 she and the team were awarded the prize of Polish Minister of Science and Higher Education for innovative teaching in veterinary basic sciences.
She is the member of Polish Society for Veterinary Sciences (currently the head of local section in Lublin), Society for Biology of Reproduction, Veterinary Chamber, Committee of Veterinary Sciences at Polish Academy of Sciences.
She participates in teaching of chemistry and biochemistry for veterinary students. She implements innovative methods of teaching which help increasing motivation of students and develop clinical reasoning. Together with coworkers from Biochemistry in Hannover and Physiology from Budapest the team applied for European grant entitled „Use of virtual patients/virtual problems in veterinary basic sciences” and created 30 virtual patients for self study in biochemistry (www.vetvip.eu). The use of virtual patients increased the quality of teaching and resulted in the decrease of bad marks and the increase of good marks of biochemistry exam.
She uses SOCRATES/ERASMUS Exchange programme for teachers for dissemination of knowledge about innovative teaching, gaining new experience and collaboration in teaching biochemistry.
University professor (Assoc. Prof.) in Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Life Sciences in Lublin

Monika Jamioł graduated with a MSc from the Faculty of Food Science and Biotechnology in Lublin in 2014 and immediately started working at the Department of Biochemistry at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
She defended her PhD thesis entitled „ The influence of decorin, progesterone and prostaglandin F2α on the adhesion of endometrial cells of pregnant bovine uterus” in September 2020.
Since 2017, she has been actively creating a cell culture laboratory as part of the Department of Biochemistry. She gained knowledge and skills in the field of cell culture during two stays at the Institute of Anatomy of the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover. The cell cultures are the model to study the influence of selected hormones and proteins of the extracellular matrix on the process of cell adhesion, which plays an important role in the maturation and functioning of the placenta during pregnancy.
She published scientific papers in journals on the Journal Citation Reports list, among others in Placenta, Reproduction in Domestic Animals, BMC Veterinary Research and Research in Veterinary Science. She presented her research results during scientific national and international conferences and meetings, among others in Giessen, Zurich, Lodi (Milan) and Rostock (Warnemünde).
She participates in teaching of Chemistry and Biochemistry for both Polish- and English-speaking veterinary students. The knowledge gained during the study visit in the University of Groningen (Netherlands) as a part of “Masters of Didactics” course, allows her to implement innovative activities to engage students in active learning.
She uses International ERASMUS+ Exchange Programme for academic teachers in order to acquire new laboratory techniques as well as new teaching skills in the field of biochemistry. In 2015-2019, she completed 9 visits abroad under the programme: including stays (teaching staff mobility for assignments) to run classes for students in English at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Budapest (in 2017 and 2018), as well as 7 stays to improve the professional competences (staff mobility for training), including 4 at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover (2015, 2016, 2017 and 2019), at the University of Zurich (2017), at the University of Bologna (2018) and at the University of Milan (2019).
She improved her language skills by participating in an “Intensive training course in specialized academic English using veterinary and zoological terminology” as part of the project “Integrated Program for the Development of the University of Life Sciences in Lublin” which lasted from January 2019 to May 2020.
Department is responsible for lectures and practicals in obligatory subjects Chemistry and Biochemistry as well as facultative subjects Endocrinology and Behaviorism for students of veterinary medicine. Practicals are conducted in laboratory equipped with necessary chemical equipment and items for safe laboratory work.
Apart from classic frontal lectures and practicals in laboratory we use innovative teaching methods for self study – virtual cases. Virtual cases were prepared in cooperation with University of Veterinary Medicine in Hannover and Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Budapest within the frame of European project. More details about the project can be found at www.vetvip.eu
Each year the competition for ideal didactic materials is announced. Students actively participate in this activity and several interesting projects were created like board games, movies, phone or internet applications.
