Biotechnology – in Polish
Faculty: Food Science and Biotechnology
Type of studies: full time studies/Engineer’s degree
Duration: 7 semesters (3.5 years)

  • Information about the programme

Biotechnology provides the opportunity to acquire interdisciplinary knowledge of natural sciences, with particular emphasis on technology and modern methods of experimental biology.

First-cycle biotechnology students acquire knowledge of methods and tools used to solve problem tasks in the field of biotechnology.

The basic elements of the study program include: chemistry, mathematics, biochemistry, biophysics, statistics, genetics, microbiology, virology

Elements related to biotechnology include: bioprocessor engineering and equipment, biochemical and metabolic engineering, analytical techniques in biotechnology, molecular biology, genetic engineering, plant biotechnology and in vitro cultures, food biotechnology, biotechnology in environmental protection, bioinformatics, animal biotechnology and tissue culture.

Students participate in numerous classes in the excellently equipped laboratories. In addition, they take part in an internship and vocational traineeship programme at national and international level, which helps them prepare for entry into the labour market. Graduates of first-cycle studies are prepared to undertake master’s studies.

  • Examples of courses

Molecular biology, industrial microbiology, biological methods for plant protection, embryology, pharmaceutical biotechnology, measurement and control systems in bioengineering, biotechnology in environmental protection, food biotechnology, biotechnology in diagnostics and treatment.

  • Admission

Recruitment for studies proceeds electronically through the IRK system. A personal registration account is used to apply for the chosen course(s) and is the only source of information for the candidate on the outcome of the recruitment procedure.

Candidates with a secondary school certificate can apply for admission to first-cycle studies.

The recruitment procedure for first-cycle studies for candidates

    – with the so-called “new matura” are based on the results of the written part of the external matura examination. In the assessment of the competition, multiplying factors are used, which refer to the grades of subjects taken at the matura exam at basic or extended level.

    – with the so-called “old matura” is based on a competition of secondary school certificates. If a candidate has not passed the secondary school leaving examination in the subjects included in the competition, the final grades in these subjects included in the school leaving certificate are taken into account.

    – laureates and finalists of olympiads and competitions: depending on the subject of the competition or olympiad, preferential rules are taken into account.

Subjects to be taken into account in the recruitment process: modern foreign language and one subject of choice: biology, chemistry, physics, computer science, mathematics.

  • Career perspectives

The graduate has knowledge of biotechnology used in the food, chemical, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries, health care and environmental protection; acquires the ability to design bioprocesses and bioproducts.

A graduate can find work in:

    • scientific and research laboratories of the biotechnology industry and related industries,
    • research, control and diagnostic laboratories,
    • cosmetic and pharmaceutical companies,
    • units dealing with the design of biotechnological processes, including: plant cultivation and animal breeding centres, food production and processing plants, and units dealing with environmental protection,
    • the knowledge gained during the studies also makes it easier to set up one’s own biotechnology company.
