Faculty of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture

History

As an independent unit, the Faculty of Horticulture was established by a decree of the Ministry of Science and University Education of 21 May 1970 (no. DR-3-D14-21/70). The above was the culmination of many years of efforts of a small group of people who were particularly committed to creating the possibility of educating young people in this field of knowledge in the region of Lublin. Those individuals were i.a.: prof. dr Stanisław Bujak – a Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, later a Vice-Rector for  Science at the University of Life Sciences in Lublin, prof. dr. Stanislaw Zaliwski – head of the Department of Horticulture and a Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, prof. dr hab. Jerzy Korohoda – a recognised breeder of horticultural plants, head of the Department of Genetics and Horticultural Plant Breeding. Prof. Korohoda was not directly involved in the organisation of the Faculty of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture but very supportive of its establishment. Prof. Stanisław Bujak and prof. Stanisław Zaliwski, who, in the 1960s were assistents of the rector of the university responsible for organisation of the Faculty of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture.

Horticulture didactic classes (1944–1945) for students were run by one of the founders of the Faculty of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture – Proessor Stanisław Zaliwski, a well-known scientist, practitioner and populariser of the knowledge of horticulture. In the period 1947-1948, classes in vegetable crops were conducted  by prof. dr Stanisław Wiśniewski.

In 1951, at the Faculty of Agriculture of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University, a Sub-department of Horticulture was established, later on transformed into the Department of Horticulture the head of which was dr Stanisław Zaliwski. In the early 1960s, there was a dynamic development of the Department. Thanks to the efforts of prof. dr Stanisław Bujak, who was a Vice-Rector of the University of Life Sciences at that time, several specialists were admitted to the Department: dr Marian Kossowski (1961), dr Tadeusz Zderkiewicz (1963), prof. dr Zofia Demianowicz, prof. dr Antoni Demianowicz, dr Jan Szendel (1964), prof. dr hab. Teresa Hulewicz, prof. dr Dzierżykraj Hulewicz (1965) and dr Józef Dąbrowski (1969). In 1962, the Council of Faculty of Agriculture adopted a resolution to establish the Horticultural branch at the Faculty of Agriculture and presented a project of the organisational structure of the unit. The resolution was signed by the Dean of the Faculty prof. dr Stanisław Bujak and was presented to the Ministry of Science and University Education. The Ministry approved only the establishment of horticulture specialisation at the Faculty of Agriculture which started its operation in the academic year 1963/1964.

Three years later, in 1965, the Council of the Faculty of Agriculture presented a request again to establish the Horticultural branch on the basis of the existing horticultural specialisation. At the same time, the Department of Horticulture was reorganised and the following sub-departments were created: Pomology, Vegetable Crops, Plant Genetics and Cultivation, Soil Science and Plant Cultivation and Apiculture. On 23 April 1966, by the decision of the Ministry of Science and University Education, the Horticultural branch was established at the Faculty of Agriculture. In 1968, the position of deputy dean for  horticulture was created and the position was held by dr Tadeusz Przybysz. In the academic year 1969/70, this function was performed by doc. dr hab. Zofia Uziak.

Further efforts to establish a Faculty of Horticulture were finalised with a positive decision of the Ministry of Science and University Education in May 1970. Apart from the above-mentioned units, some departments of the Faculty of Agriculture, along with their scientific and didactic achievements, were transferred to the new faculty: Department of Botany, Department of Plant Physiology and Department of Plant Protection.

The establishment of the Faculty of Horticulture coincided with a thorough nationwide reorganisation of the university and the establishment of institutes. The beginning of the operation of the faculty was 1 September 1970.  The organisational structure of the faculty included three existing institutes renamed as didactic teams, which after a year of activity were changed to sub-departments.

I Institute of Nature-Based Plant Production (1970-1991), head: doc. Kazimierz Olech (1970-1978), prof. Zofia Uziak (1978-1991), which included the following units:

Sub-department of Botany, head: doc. Adam Tomaszewski (1970-1981), prof. Zofia Warakomska (1982-1991); in 1989, the Laboratory for Horticultural Plants Biology was established, head: prof. Kazimiera Szklanowska (1989-1991);

Sub-department of Plant Physiology, head: prof. Zofia Uziak (1970-1991);

Sub-department of Genetics and Horticultural Plant Breeding, head: prof. Teresa Hulewicz (1970-1982), doc. Jan Piech (1982-1989), prof. Jerzy Hortyński (1989-1991);

Sub-department of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation, head: prof. Dzierżykraj Hulewicz (1970-1975), prof. Józef Nurzyński (1975-1989).

II Institute of Horticulture Production (1970-1989), head: prof. Stanisław Zaliwski (1970-1973), doc. Józef Dąbrowski (1973-1981), prof. Jerzy Hetman (1981-1989):

Sub-department of Pomology, head: prof. Stanisław Zaliwski (1970-1974), prof. Janusz Lipecki (1974-1989);

Sub-department of Vegetable Crops, head: prof. Marian Kossowski (1970-1989);

Sub-department of Ornamental Plants, head: dr Jan Szendel (1970), doc. Józef Dąbrowski (1971-1979), prof. Jerzy Hetman (1979-1989);

Sub-department of Medicinal Plants, head: doc. Tadeusz Zderkiewicz (1970-1972); in 1972, the Sub-department of Medical Plants was closed down and in 1980, the Sub-department of Horticultural Seed Production and Nursery was established, head: doc. Eugeniusz Gawronski (1980-1989).

In 1981, the Sub-department of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation was transferred from the Institute of Nature-Based Plant Production to the Institute of Horticulture Production.

III. Institute of Plant Protection (1970-1982), head: prof. Tadeusz Ziarkiewicz (1970-1982):

Sub- department of Entomology, head: prof. Tadeusz Ziarkiewicz (1970-1982);

Sub-department of Phytopathology, head: prof. Barbara Łacic (1970-1982);

Sub-department of Plant Protection, head: prof. Bartłomiej Miczulski (1970-1982).

In the year of the establishment of the Faculty of Horticulture and Landscape Agriculture, the structure of the personnel was as follows: 47 academic teachers, including 4 professors, 8 university readers, 11 assistant professors, 2 senior lecturers, 22 assistants and 15 engineering and technical employees.

In 1982-1991, the institutes operating in the faculty were closed down and the existing sub-departments were transformed back to their former structure of departments. The return to the original organisational structures had a positive effect on the consolidation of research teams, helped to develop the scientific specialisation of the staff, facilitated the financing of units and the organisational works of the entire faculty. At that time, there was a lot of interest among young people in horticulture and the number of students was constantly growing which led to the employment of more assistants in the departments and consequently, there was an increase in the number of academic teachers and students who were granted scientific degrees and titles of professor. The structure of the personnel of the faculty enabled the creation of new organisational units according to the newly-formed research and teaching teams and the needs of the faculty.

In 1989 dr hab. Eberhard Makosz joined the Department of Horticultural Seed Production and Nursery and in 1990, he was entrusted a position of associate professor of the university and was in charge of the department. In the early 1990s, prof. E. Makosz initiated the organisation of the Department of Horticultural Economics and in 1995, he became the head of that unit.

Over the subsequent years, there were further organisational changes in the units of the faculty:

1993 – establishment of the Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation in the Sub-department of Horticultural Plant Cultivation and Fertilisation, head: dr hab. Tadeusz Kęsik;

1994 – the Department of Vegetable Crops is renamed to the Department of Vegetable Crops and Medicinal Plants (head: dr hab. Jan Dyduch); the Sub-department of Berry Plants was established in the Department of Pomology, head: prof. dr hab. Justyna Wieniarska;

1995 – establishment of the Department of General Ecology (head: prof. dr hab. Iwo Wojciechowski) and the Department of Horticultural Economics (head: prof. dr hab. Eberhard Makosz); the Department of Phytopathology and Plant Protection was transformed into two departments: Department of Phytopathology (head: prof. dr hab. Zofia Machowicz-Stefaniak) and the Department of Plant Protection and Quarantine (head: prof. dr hab. Antoni Filipowicz);

On 1 October 2005, the Department of Ornamental Plants was transformed into the Institute of Ornamental Plants and Landscape Architecture (head: prof. dr hab. Jerzy Hetman) with 2 sub-departments: Sub-department of Ornamental Plants (head: prof. dr hab. Halina Laskowska (2009-2011), dr hab. Elżbieta Pogroszewska, Associate Professor (since 2011) and the Sub-department of Landscape Architecture – head: dr hab. inż. arch. Elżbieta Przesmycka, Associate Professor (2005-2012) and dr hab. Krystyna Pudelska, Associate Professor (since 2012).

The dynamic growth of the academic staff from the very beginning of the creation of the Faculty of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture resulted in a relatively fast acquisition of full academic rights – in 1974  – the right to confer doctoral degrees and in 1979, the right to confer postdoctoral degrees in agricultural sciences in the field of horticulture. Since obtaining the above-mentioned rights, there were 205 doctoral programmes completed, 79 postdoctoral programmes, and 46 persons were granted the title of professor.

The efficient functioning of the faculty is the merit of all employees. Special attention should be given to the employees of the dean’s office, especially the management: Irena Popiołek (1969-1978), Krystyna Przybysz (1978-1991), inż. Anna Borowska (1991-2008) and currently mgr inż. Anna Szczepanowska (since 2008).

Many employees who devoted their time to the development and proper functioning of the faculty have unfortunately left but they will always remain in the memory of future generations. We hope that this study will also contribute to the above. Persons who left our academic community are: doc. dr hab. Kazimierz Olech (1978), prof. dr hab.
