Invitation to the field workshop “A path through fields and forest to the edge of Western Roztocze”

 Dear Sir or Madam,

We warmly invite staff members and PhD students of the ZUL network universities, partners of the project AIM – Attracting International Minds. Lublin NAWA-EURAXESS Network  to participate in the field workshop from the series “Academic Walks with the Nature of Poland.”

About the workshop:

This field trip workshop will focus on exploring the natural landscape, biodiversity, and historical heritage of the Gmina Zakrzew area, located on the border of Western Roztocze. Participants will walk along a trail through fields and forests, learning about the region’s vegetation, land structure, and the diversity of soil types and cultivated plants. The workshop will also cover matters relating to private forests, including the main tree species and other vegetation found in the area. In addition, participants will visit a World War I cemetery and learn about the historical events that took place in this region. The walk will conclude at the edge of Roztocze, where participants will observe and appreciate the scenic mosaic of fields and crops spread across the rolling hills.

The workshops will be conducted in English.

 

Workshop programme:

8:00 – 9:15 – bus transfer for the workshop

9:20 – Introductory information about the workshop and beginning of the hike, landscape analysis

9:40 – Evaluation of the soil outcrop in the field and analysis of the soil profile

10:00 – Hike through the forest with information about the loess ravines, plants, and trees

10:30 – Observing the age of trees, measuring the diameter of the thickest tree encountered

11:00 – Going to the edge of the forest and to the Por River, observing the mosaic of fields located in the Western Roztocze

11:50 – Walking along the Por River, assessing its vegetation and cleanliness

12:20 – Path through the forest, assessing natural succession and early succession trees

13:00 – Walk along the road and learn about the historical significances and the battles of this area

13:20 – End of the walk and return to the bus

13:40 – Bus transfer to the town of Bychawa, the area around the lake with xerothermic vegetation

13:50 – Opportunity to eat dumplings at the site of the annual dumplings festival

15:00 – Return to Lublin

 

Registration:

We invite academic staff employed at one of the partner universities listed below, as well as doctoral students enrolled in doctoral schools operating at these universities, to participate in the workshops.

If you would like to participate in the workshop, please complete the registration form by 14 June 2026. The aim of the workshop is to combine natural sciences popularisation with intercultural integration. The number of places is limited to approximately 20 participants, including at least 10 international participants, and will be allocated according to the order of submission.

The organisers will ensure a balanced selection process, allowing representation from all partner institutions.

Participants registering for the workshops are requested to familiarize themselves with the information clause for workshop participants, the information concerning the processing of personal data of contractors and representatives of contractors of the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange, the information provided by the minister responsible for regional development, and the information provided by the National Centre for Research and Development.
