History of the Department

The Department of Economics and Agribusiness was established in 2014 when the Department of Economics and Management split into two separate units. From 2014 to 2017, the Head of the Department was Anna Kobiałka, PhD. From 2017 to 2021, the Head of the Department was University Professor Armand Kasztelan, PhD, and from 2021, the person in this role has been University Professor Anna Nowak, PhD.

The origins of the Department of Economics and Agribusiness date back to the time of the Department of Agricultural Economics, established at the Faculty of Agriculture at the MCSU in Lublin in 1945. Its founder and, at the same time, its first manager was Professor Henryk Romanowski, PhD. On 1 September 1955, this Department became an organisational unit of the Faculty of Agriculture at the Higher School of Agriculture in Lublin.

On 1 September 1970, the Institute of Economics and Organisation of Agriculture was formed and incorporated into the organisational structure of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry. In 1984, the Institute was reincorporated into the Faculty of Agriculture. On 1 September 1997, the unit was renamed the Institute of Economics and Agribusiness Organisation, corresponding to the level of development of food economics and the school’s teaching needs. In 2000, the status of the unit changed after it was transformed into the Department of Economics and Agribusiness Organisation. From 2009 to 2014, it operated as the Department of Economics and Management.

Since 2014, the number of the Department staff changed periodically, mostly due to restructuring processes. Its employees are specialists in economics and agribusiness and conduct academic research, lectures and classes in these areas.

In 2014-2017, the Department of Economics and Agribusiness conducted a research task titled “Conditions for the Development of Regions and the Competitiveness of their Bioeconomy”. The research aimed to identify social and economic conditions determining economic growth on a regional scale and analyse the competitiveness of the bioeconomy subsystem.

The following three specific objectives were pursued under the main objective:

  • assessment of regional competitiveness and cohesion,
  • identification of the conditions for the development of the bioeconomy in selected regions,
  • an analysis of the process competitiveness of the bioeconomy.

Since 2018, the Department has pursued the research task titled: “Multiple-criteria analysis of conditions for the development and competitiveness of regions and countries, with a particular focus on the role of the bioeconomy subsystem”. The basic objective of the research is the identification of economic, social and environmental conditions for the development of regions and countries and the evaluation of the competitiveness of selected spatial units, with a particular focus on the role of the bioeconomy in such processes.

Research conducted at the Department of Economics and Agribusiness covers issues that are essential and current issues for the operation of the economy and society. The research includes:

  • global, national and regional development processes, notably those based on the assumptions of sustainable development,
  • assessment of the conditions for development, and finding tools for evaluating the competitiveness potential and level of the economies and sectors,
  • searching for sources of growth in agriculture and improving its competitiveness, in compliance with the principles of sustainable growth,
  • competitiveness of the agri-food sector in terms of international trade,
  • conditions for implementing the concept of the bioeconomy in terms of sustainable development and green growth,
  • evaluation of the potential of the bioeconomy and its significance in Poland and other member states of the European Union,
  • evaluation of the potential of agriculture in terms of food security, and assessment of the level of achievement of Poland’s sustainable development goals.

 The Department workers conduct research in the area of economics, finance, and agriculture and horticulture. They are specialists in economics and agribusiness and conduct lectures and classes and supervise dissertations in these areas.

The employees of the Department of Economics and Agribusiness teach at the Faculties of:

  • Agrobioengineering,
  • Biology, Animal Sciences and Bioeconomy,
  • Food Science and Biotechnology,
  • Environmental Biology,
  • Veterinary Medicine.
