Marta Duda, MSc, honoured in the 16th Competition for the best thesis
A student of the University of Life Sciences in Lublin was recognised in the 16th edition of the Competition for the best thesis, organised for studies devoted to the development of Lublin and the Lublin Metropolitan Area.

A total of 26 works prepared by students and doctoral students were submitted to this year’s edition of the competition. They covered issues related to the development of the city of Lublin and its metropolitan area, in particular in spatial, economic and environmental terms. The Competition Committee awarded the main prizes in the categories of doctoral theses, master’s theses, bachelor’s theses and engineering theses, as well as four honourable mentions.
One of the awards went to Marta Duda, a student at the University of Life Sciences in Lublin, who received PLN 3,000 for her master’s thesis entitled Assessment of the effectiveness of removing pollutants from the waters of the Ciemięga River in a hydrophytic system in the first year of operation. The thesis was prepared under the supervision of Krzysztof Jóźwiakowski, PhD, DSc, ProfTit.
The research results presented in this paper have significant practical importance – they can support activities related to water resource management and nature conservation. The proposed solutions are consistent with municipal programmes concerning water and sewage management, environmental protection and the development of so-called blue infrastructure.
‘We want students to be eager to tackle issues that are important for Lublin in the broader context of its development – from economic and spatial issues to social, cultural, tourist and environmental ones,’ emphasised Krzysztof Żuk, Mayor of Lublin, thanking the participants for their valuable work and commitment to the city.
The student’s success is further confirmation that the research carried out at the University responds to the real challenges facing contemporary cities and regions, and that its results can have a measurable impact on the sustainable development of Lublin.
